Thoughts?

Do you believe in ghosts?

addicted to horror

the story
A young widowed lawyer makes a business trip to an isolated village where he meets the vengeful apparition of a deceased woman.

the good
- thoroughly frightening and intense
- more scares than the usual genre film
- quite a few memorable moments
- outstanding set and costume design
- well-written story
- the ending

the bad
- Daniel Radcliffe doesn't fit the role
- some jump scares are just plain silly
- underwhelming third act

the ugly
- moderate level of violence and gore
- very high level of scares and frightening scenes
- low level of nudity and sexual themes
- low level of profanity

things I learned from watching this movie *possible spoilers ahead*
- it might be a good idea to stay away from haunted houses and evil ghosts
- everyone is unfriendly in the strange, remote village
- dogs are a surprisingly good replacement for infants
- don't follow the creepy noises and eerie sounds to their source
- the best way to protect your children is to keep them locked in the basement
- if your village has a track record for children dying in mysterious ways, perhaps it's time to find a new place to live
- mud works wonders for preserving bodies
- performing random rituals will definitely keep the wicked ghost woman away
- maybe it's best to keep an eye on your child while at the train station

verdict
Starring a Daniel Radcliffe fresh off the Harry Potter series, The Woman in Black is a welcome change from the cheap jump scares and senseless ghost stories that plague the majority of modern day films of the genre. That’s not to say that The Woman in Black is devoid of any eye-rolling moments, but its storyline is involving and the tension building is done well enough to set it apart from the run-of-the-mill haunted house fare. Radcliffe may not fit the role he’s given here, but he performs adequately, and there’s enough going on in terms of frights to keep your attention drawn elsewhere anyway. Scares of every variety and levels of audio volume nearly guarantee a worthwhile experience all by themselves – this is a ghost story that should not be missed.
