the plot
It is the year 2019 and most of the human population are now vampires in need for blood while the number of supplies keeps declining. Meanwhile, a vampire hematologist developing a new blood substitute starts working with a group of rebel humans who seem to have found the cure for vampirism.
the good
- great opening
- offers a lot of creativity in depicting life in a vampire community
- makes for an entertaining, thrilling ride
- overall good design and impressive visuals
- solid acting
- can be quite brutal at times
- very realistic for a vampire movie
the bad
- a lot of cheap jump scares
- some nasty cliches here and there
- typical corporate villain
- a few minor plotholes and things that don't make sense
- somewhat unsatisfying conclusion
- Willem Dafoe plays one obnoxious and inappropriate character
the ugly
- lots of blood
- lots of vampires
- lots of mutated vampires
- vampires exploding
- vampires burned by the sun
- some neck-biting action
- one well-deserved human vampire feast towards the end
- all the jump scares you can handle
things I learned from watching this movie
- all protagonist vampires are named Edward
- even though the whole freakin' world is going nuts due to low blood supplies, researchers don't bother too much over finding a blood substitute
- apparently, coffee mixes well with blood
- future high-tech home security systems will be able to warn you when your 'backdoor is ajar,' but they won't be able to automatically lock it
- experimenting for blood substitutes may sometimes cause volunteers to explode in a marvellous spectacle that leaves the room filled with blood and little body parts
- if the villain gets fed upon by vampires he'll get ripped to shreds, decapitated and suffer a violent death; on the other hand, if the protagonist's brother gets fed upon he will still look decent even after the vampires are done with him
- some vampires actually burn when faced with sunlight, instead of just sparkling
- some people just can't keep vampirism to themselves
summary
Daybreakers offers a refreshing break from the vampire movie craze that has been going on for the past couple of years and it brings the evil, scary vampires back to the screen. It's also a lot of fun and the cast is decent, apart from a few misplaced roles (see Willem Dafoe). There's a lot of jump scares which make the movie feel cheap at times, but they are easily overlooked due to the fine design and creative ideas put into the film. It may not be the next vampire classic, but it's nonetheless a great vampire flick in period filled with countless bad ones.
